Title of Presentation: "Choosing Public Service"
About the Program: Government can sometimes feel overwhelming, mystifying, or even intimidating to some people. This Women in Business presentation seeks to familiarize the audience with accessible entry points for advocacy and participation in government and to empower people to make a difference in their community and state. Audience members will hear from Rep. Katrina Shankland about her experiences, and will learn tools that will help them support their communities through their own forms of public service.
Attendees will learn:
- How to turn passion into effective advocacy
- How to participate in government, including best practices for how to lobby legislators on issues of importance
- Ways to make an impact locally through volunteering, public service, and more
About our Speaker: Representative Katrina Shankland lives in Stevens Point and represents Wisconsin's 71st Assembly District, which covers most of Portage County. Rep. Shankland currently serves as the ranking member on the Assembly Committee on Workforce Development, and is a member of the Assembly Committee on the Environment, the Assembly Committee on Colleges & Universities, the Assembly Committee on Sporting Heritage, the Assembly Committee on Agriculture, and the Governor's Council on Workforce Investment. She is also Vice Chair of the Wisconsin Legislative Paper Caucus. When she was first elected, Rep. Shankland was the youngest member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, and she served as its youngest ever Assistant Minority Leader during her second term. She is currently serving her fifth consecutive term in office.
In addition to her legislative service, Rep. Shankland recently received her Masters in Community and Organizational Leadership from UW-Stevens Point. In her free time, she enjoys long walks with her dogs Stitch and Lyra, visiting Central Wisconsin's many breweries, distilleries, and wineries with her husband Jed, and enjoying the natural beauty, incredible people and community events that make the Stevens Point area so special.
To add to the fun, door prizes will be handed out after the show, along with a 50/50 raffle winner announcement.
