Description
We all have a family history of some medical condition. In many situations, family history of a medical condition can be attributed to differences in family members’ DNA. Information on DNA changes linked to disease has expanded rapidly over the last decade due to human genetics research. Despite this progress, a diagnosis often requires careful accumulation of a family’s medical history and testing of multiple affected and unaffected family members.
Learning from PreventionGenetics staff, registrants will explore the basic principles of human genetics, the power of genetic testing, and how long-term storage of DNA samples (also known as DNA banking) benefits family members for generations to come. Participants will also gain tools necessary to begin recording their family’s medical history and have the opportunity to extract DNA from fruit during a hands-on experiment.
