Job Description

The Stevens Point Area Public School District is currently seeking Special Education Assistant Substitutes to work in the classroom and/or with our Transportation Department on a bus route. From now through the end of October, any substitute who applies for and receives a Special Education Program Aide License through the DPI and works 40 hours in special education assistant assignments within the 2018-2019 will have the cost of the license reimbursed by Teachers On Call. All tracking and payment will be managed by Teachers On Call.

As a Special Education Assistant Substitute, there are free trainings related to special education and serving as an educational assistant/paraprofessional via the Teachers On Call website.

We partner with Teachers On Call to hire and process substitute assistant/paraprofessional positions. They are a substitute staffing company specializing in recruiting and retaining licensed special education assistants/paraprofessionals who are able to step into a classroom or onto a school bus to support students with minimal direction. Teachers On Call's home office is in Minnesota, but all of your application can be done online. After you have submitted your application, a Wisconsin staffing coordinator will contact you regarding your next steps. There are opportunities with the Stevens Point School District to sub at both the Elementary and Secondary levels in the classroom and well as be a substitute on a bus route. Position Description for Special Education Classroom Assistant: • Support the student learning process in the classroom, playground, lunchroom, and other areas as may be designated by the building principal. • Provide physical management assistance, which may include lifting, to children as determined by the special education teacher and/or other specialists. • Work one on one or in small groups with students under the direction of the teacher. • Instructional and behavioral re-enforcement. • Deal with students who potentially exhibit verbal and/or aggressive behaviors. • Assistance in dressing, lifting and transitioning students, feeding assistance, toileting and hygiene. • Assist/monitor student in mainstreamed classes.

Position Description for Special Education Bus Assistant: • Assist the bus driver and provide support service to the special education transportation program. • Provide service to the passengers in a manner consistent with their physical and emotional needs. • Maintain orderly student behavior on the bus consistent with the student’s ability. • Assist the driver in the operation and use of special equipment and safety restraint devices. *Training will be provided for the Q-Straint system used for wheel chair tie down. • Transportation hours and times of day vary based on morning, mid-day and/or afternoon route needs. May start as early as 5:45 am and return for a mid-day and/or afternoon route which may end as late as 5:30 pm; up to 7.00 hours per day. Other duties assigned if route coverage not needed.

Qualifications

• Special Education Assistants/ Paraprofessionals: Special Ed Aide License, Substitute Permit OR a Teaching License through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) required for both the Special Education Educational Assistant and the Bus Assistant Substitute positions.
*Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
