Stevens Point, WI - On Saturday, August 3rd, 2019, the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County held their 11th annual Bike for Boys & Girls Club at AIG Travel. After 314 participants completed their ride of choice (60, 20, 13, 8, or 4 miles), they entered a carnival zone filled with good food, fun games, and activities for all. This event is a community effort. It takes passionate participants, dedicated volunteers, and kind-hearted sponsors to raise funds to support programming and free, healthy meals that are served to over 2,000 youth in Portage County at nine Boys & Girls Club sites throughout the county.
One of the highlights of the event was a Boys & Girls Club teen winning the Best Effort Award after completing her 13-mile ride on a bike that was too small for her. The teen was determined to complete her ride despite her knees hitting the handlebars with each pedal rotation. In addition to receiving a plaque, she was gifted a youth bike from Hostel Shoppe of her choosing. Her new bike will allow her to ride in comfort for next year’s event, which will be held in August.
The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County would like to thank AIG Travel for helping put on one of the Club’s largest events of the year. With the help of participants, volunteers, and sponsors, the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County was able to raise over $31,000, which will help them continue to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of every kid who walks through their doors.
The Boys & Girls Club offers a variety of programming to ensure every child’s interests are being met. The funds raised at this event will go towards programs like Healthy Habits, which teaches children that eating healthy can be fun, LEAP, a program designed to help members excel in reading, and Triple Play, a gym-like program that keeps kids active and sparks interest in team and recreational sports.
