Stressing the importance of offering nutritious meals to children during the summer months, the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County announces sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program, as well as new upgrades to its Plover Center kitchen.  Upgrades to the Plover Center kitchen will allow the Club to serve a wider variety of menu items year-round.  This summer, the Boys & Girls Club expects to serve over 20,000 free meals to kids throughout Portage County.

“No child should ever be hungry when they are at their Club and the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County continues to work towards this goal,” said Boys & Girls Club Executive Director, Kevin Quevillon.  “During the school day, students are served lunch and oftentimes a breakfast.  During the summer when parents are working they can rely on the Club to make sure their children are fed a healthy meal.”

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, along with local Club donors and grants, provides nutritious meals to children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school meals are typically unavailable.  Free meals will be made available to children 18 years of age and under.  Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well.

The following locations will be serving free meals this summer: Berard Center (June 11-Aug 23), Plover Center (June 11-Aug 23), Madison View Extension (June 11-Aug 23), Jefferson Elementary School Center (June 17-Aug 9, when summer school meals are not offered), Junction City Extension (June 17-Aug 8, when summer school meals are not offered), Almond-Bancroft Extension (June 10-Aug 8, when summer school meals are not offered), and Rosholt Extension (June 10-Aug 8).  Meals are provided to eligible children regardless of race, color, national origin, age, gender or disability and there will be no discrimination in the course of meal service.
