“Area Agencies Partner to Provide Care & Academic Support for K-6 Students at YMCA and Boys & Girls Club”
(Stevens Point, September 4th, 2020) The Stevens Point Area YMCA and Boys & Girls Club of Portage County have been awarded grant funding from the United Way of Portage County and Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin’s Covid-Relief Fund to offer Wednesday Learning Centers at the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club Berard Center, Plover Center, and JFK Kennedy School Extension in Junction City, when schools are closed.
Wednesday Learning Centers will serve students in Kindergarten through 6th grades.  The YMCA will serve Kindergarten through 2nd grade and the Boys & Girls Club will serve students in grades 3-6th, however both organizations will accommodate siblings of each age group.  A total of 226 students can attend the various centers on Wednesdays.
The Stevens Point School District will place Teacher Aids at each of the Learning Centers to provide academic support and coordination between students, parents, teachers, and schools.  “This is such a great example of how Portage County organizations partner to meet emerging needs of our families.  We are so thankful to all who have contributed to the Covid-Relief Fund,” said Sharon Johnson, CEO of the Stevens Point Area YMCA.
In addition to academic support, the Learning Centers will offer free, healthy breakfasts, lunches, and snacks, as well as a variety of fun and enriching activities.  The cost to attend is just $10 per child per Wednesday.  If families qualify for Free/Reduced Lunches, fees will be waived because of the Covid-Relief Funding provided.
Learning Centers will be open all day to support working parents starting September 16th.  “Covid-19 continues to challenge all of us. The funding we have received will provide working parents much-needed support on Wednesdays and their children will get the help they need academically to stay on track.  We are proud to partner with these agencies,” added Kevin Quevillon, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County.
If parents are interested in signing their students up for Wednesday Learning Centers they should call or visit the websites of the Boys & Girls Club (715) 341-4386/ or the YMCA (715) 952-9313/ to complete an application.  Capacity is limited, but waiting lists will be developed and future expansion of Learning Centers will be considered by partner agencies.
