Description
Situational awareness involves being aware of your immediate surroundings and the impact of your or other’s actions as it relates to the well-being of yourself and those around you. The term has received considerable attention in the military community for the last decade because of its recognized link to effective-decision making in the tactical environment.
Knowing your surroundings and being able to react to them are important skills for military and law enforcement professionals but can also be an important skill for members of a community or in a work environment. It’s also important to remember that what you perceive as happening in your surroundings may not completely represent reality. How you read a situation could be easily influenced by distractions, personal experiences, and the quality of the type and level of information that you have been given. In the workplace, knowing how serious the problems you face are, and how numerous, is crucial to your ability to avoid accidents, injuries, or even deaths. Improving situational awareness should give you a better understanding of potential risks and how you can avoid them. This class will explore techniques used by Navy SEALS to provide a way for you to think differently about your workplace and/or community to gain an understanding of existing weaknesses, ways to prepare for and react when a situation occurs, and human nature.
