UW-Stevens Point announces new chief of Police and Security Services

A veteran law enforcement officer has been named the new chief of Police and Security Services at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Chief Michele Haywood began her new role on Jan. 6. As this is a sworn law enforcement management position, she will be responsible for the leadership, planning, direction, operations and management of the University Police and Security Services, Emergency Management and the Parking Services units. She will report to Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs Pratima Gandhi.

Tony Babl retired from the chief position after nearly seven years with Police and Security Services. Babl was an integral leader at UWSP and was key in coordinating the campuses’ response to the pandemic, navigating the department as they address a myriad of needs requested of their team and helping to plan for parking needs across campus.

Haywood retired from the Milwaukee Police Department in 2022 after 27 years of service and increasing levels of responsibility, from patrol to a captain in the Technical Communications Division. She has completed advanced training in Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement and at the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy and Northwestern University School of Police Leadership. Haywood is also active in professional organizations including the Association of Public-Safety Communication Officials, International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators and National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

She holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Herzing University and a Bachelor of Science in criminology and law studies from Marquette University.

“Michele Haywood’s extensive experience in law enforcement ensures that UW-Stevens Point will maintain its high standard of safety and security for our students, faculty, staff and community,” said Gandhi. “I look forward to her leadership as part of our team.”
