Voyage into distant galaxies this June at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Allen F. Blocher Planetarium.
Planetarium shows will be offered at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in June. All regular public shows are around one hour long and include a 25-min presentation focusing on the current night sky of Central Wisconsin (bright stars, constellations, planets, etc.) All events are free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated and help continue these programs:
- Monday, June 2 – “From Earth to the Universe” – Learn about the journey of celestial discovery, from the theories of the ancient Greek astronomers to today’s grandest telescopes.
- Wednesday, June 4 – “Planets of the Solar System (Live presentation)” – Hosted by associate professor Sebastian Zamfir, director of the Blocher Planetarium and Pejsa Observatory, visit the celestial bodies in our solar system and beyond.
- Monday, June 9 – “Sunstruck!” – Gain an enhanced understanding of the Sun and how it impacts our world.
- Wednesday, June 11 – “Out There – The Quest for Extrasolar Worlds” – Explore a huge diversity of worlds waiting to be discovered.
- Monday, June 16 – “Mars: The Ultimate Voyage” – Witness what it takes to embark on the first human mission beyond Earth’s orbit.
- Wednesday, June 18 – “Supermassive Black Holes” – Shed light on the physics of black hole formation within galaxy evolution.
- Monday, June 23 – “Mysteries of Your Brain” – Jump into an animated adventure to discover what makes the human brain so special. (Recommended for ages 5-12, families)
- Wednesday, June 25 – “The Cosmic Spectrograph” – Discover spectroscopy, the science of light, and learn how scientists study the Universe by deciphering clues hidden in light arriving from distant objects.
- Monday, June 30 – “The Zodiac: The Moon, The Sun, and the Path of the Planets” – Follow the Moon and Sun as they move across the starry sky and meet constellations with well-known names.
Planetarium seating is first come, first served for up to 55 people. Groups of eight or more may schedule a special showing of any planetarium program by calling 715-346-2208 or completing an online request form. There is a cost for these requests.
The planetarium is located on the second floor of the UW-Stevens Point Science Building, 2001 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. Parking is available in Lot D behind the building and is free in all university lots after 7 p.m. and on weekends.
Public stargazing sessions will resume in mid-September.
