Portage County Historical Society Receives Wisconsin Historical Society’s Highest Honor

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The Portage County Historical Society (PCHS) has been named the 2025 recipient of the prestigious Reuben Gold Thwaites Trophy, awarded annually by the Wisconsin Historical Society to recognize overall excellence in the work of a local historical organization.

The award honors PCHS for its outstanding achievements in preservation, public programming, education, and community outreach. Named after renowned historian and former Wisconsin Historical Society director Reuben Gold Thwaites, the trophy represents the highest accolade a local history organization can receive in the state.

This marks the second time PCHS has received the Thwaites Trophy, having first earned the distinction in 1996.

“To receive this honor nearly 30 years after our first award speaks volumes about the continued growth and impact of our organization,” said John Harry, Executive Director of the Portage County Historical Society. “From new exhibits and educational programs to community partnerships and preservation efforts, this award is a reflection of the hard work and passion of our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters.”

A turning point for the organization came in 2021, when PCHS made the strategic decision to transition from an all-volunteer model to a professionally staffed operation. Since then, the organization has added multiple paid positions, expanded public programming, launched new community initiatives, and revitalized several of its historic sites.

Recent efforts include the Rhythms of the River music history exhibit at Heritage Park, the launch of a live oral history series, and high-impact events such as Heritage Days and Lagers and Loggers.

The formal award presentation will take place at a ceremony to be announced later this summer.
